BBC News - Anders Breivik trial: A 10-week ordeal

BBC News - Anders Breivik trial: A 10-week ordeal ;.. Words. The power of words. That's what I'll remember most about this trial.
Over 10 weeks, so many terrifying words have been spoken in Courtroom 250; the words of coroners in the 77 autopsy reports; detailed descriptions of how victims were hunted down and shot; words of pain from their families.
Words which journalists covering the trial have had to type, tweet, despatch and broadcast to the world.
It was often the simplest words which proved to be the most upsetting. Like the brief messages from victims' families which followed each coroner's report.
"Daddy, YOU were the best in the world."

They are.
President Barack Obama and Mitt Romney use distinct vocabularies. Each has a campaign glossary of sorts to define himself, criticize the other guy, highlight opposing economic philosophies.
Fair shot or economic freedom? The nation’s welfare or class warfare? You’re-on-your-own economics or the heavy hand of government?

U.K. Succumbs to First Double-Dip Recession Since 1970s: Economy - Bloomberg ;..
Britain, the first Group of Seven country to report output for the first quarter, was hit hard by the financial crisis that erupted in 2007 and GDP is still 4.3 percent below its pre-recession peak in early 2008. Only Japan and Italy are further behind among G-7 nations.
The last time Britain experienced a double-dip recession, defined as consecutive quarterly drops in GDP before the economy had recovered output lost in the previous recession, was 1975. That year, Labour Prime Minister Harold Wilson was in office andMargaret Thatcher was elected leader of the opposition Conservatives. U.K. Treasury forecasters and the International Monetary Fund predict the economy will grow 0.8 percent this year, the same as last year.

How Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak Is Damaging His Reformist Reputation | World | TIME.com ;..The irony is that Sreenavsan believes Najib truly wants to be a reformer, but is constrained by the realities of his governing coalition–he relies heavily on the support of politicians who control rural provinces in a semi-feudal style. To appease rural voters, Najib and his coalition have showered them with populist policies, such as a new minimum wage that will raise incomes for an estimated 3.2 million people and a 13% pay rise for civil servants. By contrast, they have ignored Bersih’s eight demands for freer and fairer elections, such as cleaning the voter rolls of fake names.

The accidental empire | New Europe

The accidental empire | New Europe ;.. IRRESPONSILITY is ...The details differ, but the idea is the same: creditors are shifting the entire burden of adjustment onto debtors, while the “center” avoids its own responsibility for the imbalances. Interestingly, the terms “center” and “periphery” have crept into usage almost unnoticed. Yet, in the euro crisis, the center’s responsibility is even greater than it was in 1982 or 1997: it designed a flawed currency system and failed to correct the defects. In the 1980’s, Latin America suffered a lost decade; a similar fate now awaits Europe.

Times they aren't a-changin' - Haaretz Daily Newspaper | Israel News '..  CHANGES MATTER .. The Green Line agreements he came up with in 1949 gave the Middle East 20 years of relative sanity. His success earned Bunche a Nobel Peace Prize.
In the midst of it all he managed to do the nearly impossible: maintain his sense of humor. In a letter to his wife he wrote: "You wouldn't believe what it's like holding these monkeys together, pushing them and coming out with an agreement. I swear I will never go back to the Palestine issue."
Had he kept his "oath," he might have spared himself great heartbreak. But Bunche went on dealing with the Israeli-Arab conflict, and in 1967 was a partner to the UN secretary-general's moves that hastened the Six-Day War; the Green Line, the greatest achievement in Bunche's lifetime, was erased and he was a partner to its erasure, with his bare hands. He died in 1971. To the very end, he considered the Six-Day War a personal tragedy.

Obama in Panic Mode?

Obama in Panic Mode? ;..  showing clear signs of panic -- of the realization that a great many former supporters, particularly centrists and independents, are thoroughly fed up with his massively failed domestic and foreign policies.
He can be seen desperately attempting to countervail the growing feeling among many voters that the country doesn't want another four years of what they've been seeing from his administration. His disastrous fiscal policies, for example, he tries to blunt by a ridiculous claim, based on the rantings of an internet columnist, that he is actually a virtual skinflint when it comes to the debt and deficits. This, of course, was totally debunked by real figures worked up by the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office, which show just the opposite.

UBS may have Facebook trading loss of $350 million - Market Day

UBS may have Facebook trading loss of $350 million - Market Day ;..  That loss is more than 10 times the $30 million that is currently being speculated in the market. The issue has to do with the failure to get confirmations and executions from the Facebook trade.
Sources said UBS wanted 1 million shares, but when it did not receive confirmations, it repeated the order multiple times and was left with much more than it intended.
"Given the size of our U.S. equity business and our role as a major market maker, UBS was affected by these issues, as we believe other market participants may have been," UBS said in a written statement. "Consistent with our policy on market comments on our positions or intra-quarter performance, we are not disclosing the amount of the loss, which is not material to UBS. We are continuing to consider avenues to recover our losses in this matter, but have not yet taken legal action."

Bernanke to Congress: It's your turn to act - Economy Watch

Bernanke to Congress: It's your turn to act - Economy Watch ;..
In meeting with lawmakers Thursday, Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke's message was clear: The Fed can steer, but Congress needs to step on the gas to keep the economy from rolling off a fiscal cliff.
"Monetary policy is not a panacea," Bernanke said in testimony to the Joint Economic Committee. He urged lawmakers to address pressing fiscal issues on which both parties have essentially declared a stalemate. Bernanke made it clear that while the Fed will take action if the domestic or global financial situations worsen, the central bank shouldn't be expected to do Congress' heavy lifting.
"I'd be much more comfortable if, in fact, Congress would take some of this burden from us," he said. Although committee members on both sides of the aisle unsuccessfully pressed Bernanke to outline specific legislative steps, the Fed chairman emphasized outcomes rather than tactics. In particular, he urged Congress to head off the prospect of a so-called "fiscal cliff" at the end of the year, when automatic spending cuts will kick in and tax cuts will expire if no action is taken.

One Way or Another, Europe Holds Key to Market’s Fate | Daily Ticker - Yahoo! Finance#more-id

One Way or Another, Europe Holds Key to Market’s Fate | Daily Ticker - Yahoo! Finance#more-id ;..
Unlike many observers, Wood believes there is an actual "solution" to Europe's problems, which is to move closer to a U.S. model of fiscal and political union, featuring "Europe-wide" solutions such as Eurobonds and common banking regulations.
"The European leaders are going to have to come up with a very dramatic compromise to creating something closer to the United States of Europe," he says. "They need to integrate with one fiscal authority. They need to come together and take 17 poorly cobbled together pieces and make it a cohesive unit."
But that's easier said than done and "it's going to have to get a lot worse before it gets better," Woods predicts. EU leaders are "going to have to make some unpleasant and politically extremely unpopular compromises."
At this juncture, it doesn't seem as if EU leaders are willing (or able) make those choices. Barring some coordinated action by global central bankers, the market might just force it upon them.

Weird World of Quantum Physics May Govern Life - Yahoo! News

Weird World of Quantum Physics May Govern Life - Yahoo! News ;.. BIRD BRAINS; ..These oddities generally don't affect everyday macroscopic objects, which are thought to be too hot and wet for delicate quantum states to withstand. But it seems nature may have found ways to harness quantum mechanics to power some of its most complex and vital systems.
"Life is made out of atoms and atoms behave quantum mechanically," said cosmologist Paul Davies of Arizona State University. "Life has been around for a long time — 3.5 billion years on this planet at least — and there's plenty of time to learn some quantum trickery if it confers an advantage."
Bird brains
One area where clues are implicating quantum mechanics is the internal compasses of birds and other migratory animals. Many bird species migrate thousands of miles every year to return not just to the same region, but to the exact same breeding spot.
For ages, scientists have puzzled how birds could achieve such a feat of navigation, assuming they possess some ability to sense direction based on Earth's magnetic field.

Bernanke Will School Congress on the Economy: Don Hays | Breakout - Yahoo! Finance#more-14916 ;..  That's because whether it's planned, spontaneous, or unintended, it is almost certain that something Bernanke says tomorrow will trigger a "freakout moment" for the markets.

For Don Hays, founder of Hays Advisory, LLC and a long-standing Bernanke advocate, that moment might be in the form of Bernanke telling Congress it's their turn to step in and take action.

"My personal thought is I don't think he needs to do anything more than what he's doing now," Hays says in the attached video. "But I think Bernanke will be sending a message to Congress: 'Congress, wake up. Do Something. Make sure this economy stays okay.'"

Europe’s ‘Call Me Maybe’ Approach to Financial Crisis Management | Daniel Gross - Yahoo! Finance ;..
Let's review. America's financial panic ended in the spring of 2009. But Europe has been seized by a series of rolling banking and fiscal crises. So far, three constituent members of the euro zone have officially cried uncle and asked for bailouts — Ireland, Greece and Portugal. A fourth — tiny Cyprus, whose banks are heavily exposed to Greece and has been relying on direct loans from China and Russia — is poised to ask for help.
And Then There's Spain
And then there's Spain. Spain sports an unemployment rate of 25 percent and a shrinking economy. Large banks that passed stress tests less than a year ago are now revealed to be functionally insolvent. Bond investors are demanding interest near six percent to borrow for 10 years.

Insight: Malaysia government losing Chinese support, putting reforms at risk | Reuters ; '..  The main ethnic Chinese party in the ruling coalition, whose parliamentary seats were halved to 15 in 2008, says it won't accept any cabinet posts if it does worse this time, raising the prospect of a government dominated by ethnic Malays.
The trend risks deepening racial fault lines if, as some analysts expect, the lead party in the coalition, the United Malays Nationalist Organisation (UMNO) effectively "gives up" on the Chinese vote and focuses on championing Malay rights to secure support in rural areas.
Some analysts think Chinese voters could be shooting themselves in the foot if a weak showing by Najib in the election hands power back to right-wingers within UMNO and puts the brakes on his reform program. The three-party opposition alliance is seen as unlikely to win enough seats to form a government.

Google has long fought for a more open Internet around the world, and even created “Transparency Report,” which looks closely at net freedom issues.
However, privacy issues in the United States and a European Union warning to Google to review its recently revamped privacy policies have haunted the Silicon Valley giant, forcing its data mining practices to the forefront.
Google’s new service may help some mainland Chinese users better understand how Beijing restricts its netizens from accessing certain material, but for the message to be really effective, Google first needs to get people to use its service again.
