Malaysia braces for electoral reform rally - Yahoo! News Singapore

Malaysia braces for electoral reform rally - Yahoo! News Singapore ;...Organisers have announced plans to gather at Independence Square in the heart of the capital Kuala Lumpur from 2:00 pm (0600 GMT) Saturday for a sit-in seeking change in a system they say is riddled with fraud.
But authorities have declared the square -- where the Malaysian flag was first hoisted in 1957 after independence from Britain -- off-limits, and on Friday obtained a court order banning public gatherings in the area.

I found a different species at The Next Web 2012 | New Europe

I found a different species at The Next Web 2012 | New Europe ;.. They proudly call themselves geeks; more formally technologists, but are they people? Is the stereotype of square-eyed programmers who are anti-social and don't know how to live, wrong? Or perhaps they are an entirely different species all together? Their special powers are harnessing the power of ideas, and making them realities. They use their knowledge, networking, and teamwork to build projects which may turn into billion dollar businesses.
Startups, startups, startups. An idea, Angel investment, Series A funding, and boom, a baby is born. That means nothing to most people in Europe.
The concept behind startups is simple. People with a good idea, get together, build a proof of concept, and then go around selling a percentage in this newly formed company in several investment rounds until they have enough money and exposure to balloon it to a full-blown business. What differentiates these businesses from the more traditional models is that we are usually talking about projects which involve the internet (no tangible goods and stocking), and that these projects are extremely high risk. Facebook and Instagram are the most notable examples that have been making the news recently.

Economic Nostradamus: We Are Literally Witnessing a Collapse

Economic Nostradamus: We Are Literally Witnessing a Collapse ;...In this current recession, we are not even close (to getting the jobs back) and that’s 50 months and counting.
The fact of the matter is that meaningful jobs won’t be returning any time soon. Recent (un)employment data indicates that cumulatively we are losing jobs each and every month. And, those jobs that do become available are minimum wage jobs that are insufficient to offset the income loss we’ve experienced since 2008.
The bottom line is that if people don’t have money, they can’t consume to keep the economy going. This leads to a vicious negative feedback loop that forces small (and large) business employers to lay off workers, which takes even more money out of the economy, which subsequently leads to more business closures and cutbacks.

The Week the Future Became Present Tense - NYTimes.com

The Week the Future Became Present Tense - NYTimes.com ;..
1. Now that advertising is back, some of it won’t be. In the same week when Google and Yahoo found new traction in a reviving global advertising market, newspapers companies like McClatchy, Media General and The New York Times had to cut their way to earnings targets because display advertising, both in print and on the Web, is not coming back in the same way. The Times’s About.com, along with aggressive cost control, helped the company beat expectations by a wide margin. But the issue of cyclical (how big the ad pie is) versus secular (how big the slice of pie is) seemed to be settled. As pure digital plays started hiring, more print-oriented enterprises adjusted to a new (and apparently diminished) normal. The Times announced on Monday that it would offer buyouts, and failing that, layoffs, of 100 newsroom employees because changes in ad buying were going off during the whole down cycle in overall spend.
(After the jump, allegations of theft, promiscuity and bad faith.)
